A Summer Prayer For Parents

It’s official…this is the last day of school for our county. For some this is their last week of high school, and for others, it is the start of summer vacation. The ending of a school year is always full of craziness–you know, the behemoth pile of papers/art projects/old permission slips/general trash they bring home from their school lockers. And don’t get me started on the  five identical copies of information cards you need to fill out for each child when they return to school (argh!). To say it can get crazy stressful is an understatement.

This summer will be the last where all three brothers will be together. With our eldest son gearing up for college, his summer will be filled with online applications, AP college courses, scholarship papers, summer jobs, portfolio building, and yes, more applications. Stick in a week-long mission trip to New York City with our church (and my mom, who will give him a tour of our birth city that he’ll never forget!), Bible Camp in Florida, and his senior year will be here before you know you it. Next summer he will start the next phase of his life. I could not be more proud and excited for him! But there is always the anxiety of wondering how he will adjust to life out there in the big wide world. That’s where prayer comes in. And lots of it.

Another first for us is this summer is that all the boys will be in the young adult youth group. No more juggling schedules to get one kid to one floor, and the others to another floor. With the new class adjustment comes a new step up in my prayer life. I find myself praying completely different things for each child. I pray less prayers of healing of scraped knees, and more prayers of strength for them to stand strong against the mountain of peer pressure to be like everyone else. Parents, never stop praying for your child. My mother was and continues to be a praying mom, and I am here today because of it. Your prayers are direct links to God’s ears. Never forget that.

Throughout this extended holiday weekend, be sure to say a prayer of thanksgiving for all the men and women who serve our country with integrity and bravery. Always remember that the work they do secures the liberties we enjoy each day. I will be paying tribute to my own special Army Veteran: Sergeant Mac. I am so honored and blessed to be the wife of a military man! (Army strong! HOOAH!)

“Pray without ceasing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

God bless you,

Rebecca
